The recent budget/debt limit standoff in the US Congress turned out to be extremely high in drama and exceptionally low in practical results. Following a familiar pattern that is gradually becoming the norm, the solution (or "deal") was mostly to punt the problem: establish whatever few goals a majority could vote for and leave the heavy lifting for later.

What happens to moral theory if, for the sake of inquiry, we consider freedom not as a human idea, nor as a goal or achievement in human thought, but as a characteristic of thought?

Or, to put it another way, imagine that human freedom stands beyond ideas. It is non-contingent: not invented by us. It is not a concept. Everyone has at least a touch of moxie. Most people wish they had more. I have more, and I can  tell you: plenty is way too much.Moxie occurs in a part of the  human brain called  the political  mandala (plural -- on MRIs it looks  like two mandolins). This  area controls many important mental  functions:
